Another Gulf Fire—Another Reason to Demand Safety

Statement of Mike Daulton, ÃÛèÖAPP Public Policy Director,  following the September 2 fire at an offshore oil platform 90 miles off Vermillion Bay.

â€œFor the second time in less than six months, we’re reminded that off-shore energy extraction can have tragic consequences for people, our economy and our environment.  It’s a painful confirmation that off-shore drilling demands extensive and verified safety precautions.

Together with the memory of oil spewing from a mile blow the Gulf, this latest mishap reaffirms that America must no longer rely on inflated emergency plans and trumped-up industry assurances to save us from the peril of drilling disasters.

â€œWe need our waters, our coasts, our wildlife and our futures protected—that requires safety measures that are thoroughly tested and ready to go.  America’s fossil fuel addiction brings serious risks and the potential for devastating consequences.  This latest incident is a grim reminder that offshore drilling must be made safer.  Congress should immediately pass legislation to improve drilling safety and set us on a path to a cleaner, safer energy future."
