121st CBC Season Highest Tallies for Individuals in the United States

United States Christmas Bird Counts reported 664 species, eight Count Week (CW) species, 69 infraspecific forms (forms), and 40 exotics.  The Cuban Pewee and Black-faced Grassquit at Lower Keys – Key Deer N.W.R. in Florida, the Red-legged Thrush at Key West in Florida, and the Siberian Accentor at Homer in Alaska were new species.  The CW Spotted Rail at Choke Canyon S.P. Texas was also new.  There were seven additional CW species (Spectacled Eider, Red-throated Pipit, Masked Booby, Sooty Tern, Rose-throated Becard, Chestnut-sided Warbler, and Streak-backed Oriole) which had been reported in previous years.

Competition for the most high tallies of individuals was tight this season. Forty-six states had a high-count for at least one species. California still led all states with high tallies for 112 species, 12 forms, and 17 exotics.   Texas was closer than normal with 101 species, five forms, and six exotics.  Florida not far behind placed 3rd with high counts for 97 species, three forms, and 21 exotics, and was followed by Arizona with 78 species, six forms and one exotic, Hawaii with 65 species, four forms, and one exotic, Alaska 35 species, Massachusetts 24 species and two forms, Louisiana with 23 species and two forms, Washington 21 species and one form, Oregon 19 species and four forms, and Colorado 13 species and 10 forms. All other states had less than 13 high counts.

We welcome the new Florida CBC, Homestead, which has demonstrated it can produce high counts of individuals with some of the best in the country.  Homestead placed 7th this season with high tallies for 13 species.  Gainesville, FL, had the most high tallies for the 2nd time with 18 species.  Kendall Area, FL, placed 2nd with high counts for 17 species and eight exotics, Matagorda County – Mad Island Marsh, TX, had high counts for 16 species and two forms, Tucson Valley, AZ, 15 species and one form, Midway Atoll, HI, 15 species, Harlingen, TX, 14 species and one form, San Diego, CA, 12 species and one exotic, O’ahu: Honolulu, HI, 11 species and one exotic, and high counts for nine species each for Atascosa Highlands and Nogales, AZ, San Francisco, CA, and Kaua’i: Lihu’e, HI.
