United States Christmas Bird Counts reported 641 species, 58 infraspecific forms, six Count Week species, and 37 exotics. The Marsh Sandpiper reported on HI, Moloka’i: Kualapu’u, Amazon Kingfisher at Laredo, TX, and Yellow (Mangrove) Warbler at Coastal Tip, TX were new to U.S. CBCs.
California led all states with 128 species, 15 forms, and 13 exotics. Texas came in 2nd with 97 species, five forms, and two exotics. Florida placed 3rd with 81 species, four forms, and 14 exotics and was followed by Arizona with 74 species, five forms, and one exotic, Hawaii 67 species, three forms and two exotics, Alaska 32 species, Louisiana 21 species and one form, Massachusetts 21 species, Washington 20 species and one form, and Oregon 17 species. All other CBCs had less than 10 high counts.
Atascosa Highlands, AZ, led the Nation with 15 species. Tucson Valley, AZ, was 2nd with 14 species and two infraspecific forms, and Kendall Area 3rd with 14 species. They were followed by Harlingen, TX, with 12 species, San Diego, CA, with 11 species and three forms, and Portal, AZ, with 11 species. There was an amazing seven CBCs which had 10 species. These were Anchorage, AK, Point Reyes Peninsula, CA, Gainesville, FL, Hawai’i: Hilo, O’ahu: Honolulu, Midway Atoll, and Matagorda County – Mad Island Marsh, TX. Kaua’i: Kapa’a had eight species and two forms, and eight species for Hayward-Fremont, CA, Hawai’i: Volcano, and Concord, MA. Seven species and one form were reported by Gila River, AZ, and seven species by Guadalupe River Delta & Santa Ana NWR, TX. All other CBCs had six or fewer high counts.
All-time high counts were made for only 18 species/forms this season. This was the lowest number of all-time high records for a season this century. Two of these were at least 30 years old. The 3443 Common Loons reported by NC, Wilmington broke the 36-year old record of 2500 reported by NC, Morehead City, and the 18 Hawaiian Hawks found at HI, Hawai’i: Hilo broke another 36-year old record of 14 made by HI, Hawai’i: Volcano.
The most frequent highest tally for the 699 species and infraspecific forms was one individual for 7% of the reports. Groupings of tallies from 2-10 birds represented 14% of the reports, 11-100 = 24%, 101-1000 = 33%, and >1000 = 22%. This proportion of species with 10 or fewer individuals is consistent with past years.
Many individual CBCs have about 10% of their species represented by one individual. With the bulk of the birding focus on the species tally, the success or failure of a count will be based on a minute fraction of the overall bird population in the area.
